Match report: Paddintgton Rabbits

Sunday brought Plastics XI to the Lakes for an Exiles home game. On a week where the forecast was terrible for Sunday all week, it was a pleasant surprise to see most of the day looking clear.

After a quick roll of the wicket from part time groundsman Aidan, Charlie won the toss and elected to bat first taking in to account the thought of the wicket getting worse as the game went on and helped along by the Ed having to leave at 5pm...

It was back to the lakes for the Visit of Paddington Rabbits, It was a first game for the rabbits at the lakes after playing them at Paddington last year. With Charlie out for this week, Luke was captain for the game and as he walked out for the toss there was an Exiles first. With the Opposition Captain Jack Cooper also being our newly crowned Player of the Year for 2021! Sunday cricket at its finest! Luke won the toss and elected to Bat and opened with Paul and got of to a good start until Luke got a ball that didn’t want to bounce and was unlucky be out early on. Jez then came in at 3 and looked very good to stable the ship. Meanwhile Paul at the other end was in full T20 mode and will hitting the bowling to absolutely all parts and brought up a 50 that felt like it was off around 20 balls. He was then joined at the crease by Ed and together they were putting the exiles in a great position with Paul moving on to 100, making it the first exiles Century of the season! Ed also made to 50 with a great knock and with some late contributions from Sam and Marcel, the exiles were in a great position at the break, with Paddington needing 277 runs from their 40 overs to win. There was a threat of no tea, however Lee stepped up to the plate and along with homemade BBQ chicken brought from Leon, provided an amazing BBQ for some food with some drinks provided by the club (and spectators). A great success and one that would be great to do again. As the Exiles took the field, there was optimism that this could be the end of our losing streak. This was helped by Josh “cool Josh” Smith and Aidan opening the bowling brilliantly and both of them taking a wicket a piece. With further wickets from Paul, who was having the game of his life, removing both part time Exiles players Raj and Jack and Jez. There was then time for Debutant Stanley to bowl, who threatened the Paddington Batsmen with some good line and length bowling and Marcel who took his first wicket for the club, well done Marcel! The innings then was finished off by Paul, the man who could do no wrong it seems. It was a great win for the exiles with a very good team performance from everyone involved and we could all enjoy a drink afterwards with some beers and some strong homemade wine from the opposition, showing the true spirit of Sunday cricket! While there was many top performers, it is hardly surprising that Paul gets this man of the match with a career best 129 and also bowling figures of 3-11 and taking a catch. A performance that he will be expected to top next week ….. Next week we face SW United, when we will be looking to start a winning streak.
