Match report: Hobgoblin Nomads
So it was the turn of another new team as we travelled to Sydenham to play Hobgoblin Nomads, a team that had apparently played us 10 years previous, yet no one could remember! We arrived and the first look at the wickets was something unique in this country, with it looking more like a test match in the UAE! Charlie won the toss and with it being 30 degrees + it was his idea to bat first. Luke and Marcel opened the batting and after playing a lovely shot down the ground for 4, Luke was caught playing the same shot. After a couple of further wickets, the was a bit of a resurgence from Lee, we started to score more freely. However, as we batted the wicket started to play against us, with a spinner from one end regularly finding a spot when the ball would stay on the floor and not bounce. With that bowler ending with figures of 6-19. Not bad for a Sunday! After much of the same, wickets where people were getting out by the pitch, we finished our innings on a low score of 84. We then went out to bowl, knowing it would take a special bowling and fielding effort to get to a winning position. We started well with Josh Pizey, taking some early wickets, and removing the opener. His second wicket was a caught behind that was never hit but the umpire admitted it was given out as he missed an LBW. Classic Village Cricket! However the longer the innings went on it was getting out of control and a fine innings from the same bowler who took the 6 wickets and he finished the game. With Aaron also finishing on 2 wickets. A tough game on a very tough wicket to try and play on but a good game played in the spirit of Sunday cricket, where there was a nearby pub called the Pavilion, An apt name after how we batted and where the night was messier for some than others …. Player of the Match goes to Lee who without him, it would have been an even worse score line and we could have been done even quicker! Batting on that kind of wicket is never easy and do it when we needed it, was a very good effort. We move onto next week for Part 2 against Headley!
