Match report: Headley (H)
Sunday brought Plastics XI to the Lakes for an Exiles home game. On a week where the forecast was terrible for Sunday all week, it was a pleasant surprise to see most of the day looking clear.
After a quick roll of the wicket from part time groundsman Aidan, Charlie won the toss and elected to bat first taking in to account the thought of the wicket getting worse as the game went on and helped along by the Ed having to leave at 5pm...
It was only 2 weeks after out last trip to Headley, yet here we were, making the trek all over again. It was a lovely sunny day and we looked for a win against a team we had recently lost to. After an agreement on which would be used, Charlie won the toss and elected to field. Unfortunately that was as good as it got for the exiles …. Leon and Aidan opened the bowling and while they started tidily, it was very obvious, very quickly that it was not the best wicket for Pace and Aaron was brought on and very quickly started to get rewards on an incredibly dry wicket. There was a debut for Josh Quinn who started very impressively behind the stumps in Luke’s absence and taking a fine catch of Aarons bowling. Overall the bowling and especially the fielding allowing Headley to score runs at will, the opening batsmen looked set for a century until on 95 he was at the non-strikers end when the ball was fired back at Aidan and he got his hand on the ball to direct the ball on the stumps to run him out! Ouch …….. After some late exemplary fielding from Aidan stopping some late runs, it wasn’t quite enough from the team as a whole and Headley finished on a high score of 302. Gideon and Josh Quinn opened the batting and Gideon was unlucky with a ball that bounced up at him, meanwhile the other end Josh was looking very solid and eventually was out for a fine 34. The wickets then started to fall and it was clear the game was gone. There was a push at the end with Germaine, who finished on 34 also and Aidan who came in and played some lovely shots for another not out to add to the stats and ended on 11. Overall it was a bad loss but we move on to next week against Paddington, where we will look to start a winning streak. The Player of the Match for this week is Josh Quinn who on his debut was brilliant behind the stumps, saving many byes that would have made the scoreboard look worse! Then opened with a great knock and was unlucky to miss out on a 50. On top of that he umpired and even brought everyone a drink after!
