Match report: Club match
Sunday brought Plastics XI to the Lakes for an Exiles home game. On a week where the forecast was terrible for Sunday all week, it was a pleasant surprise to see most of the day looking clear.
After a quick roll of the wicket from part time groundsman Aidan, Charlie won the toss and elected to bat first taking in to account the thought of the wicket getting worse as the game went on and helped along by the Ed having to leave at 5pm...
It was time for the day of the Club Match, a club tradition that in recent years has been a massive success, with the colts/parents game being before the hard ball game between first team players. The colts match was first and with help from Mark, Gideon and Aaron, it was great to see some of the cricket on show from the next generation! Stanley being the star of the game scoring 70! It will be great to see how they all progress in the future. It was a great turn out from many of the colts to come down and get some parents playing too. The second half of the day was the hard ball match and with there being 2 teams separated into a team batting first, which would be captained on the day by Aaron with Luke and Aidan not being present. The Team fielding first would be captained by Charlie. The first inning saw some very good performances with Leon bowling well, his second clean bowling Ewan with a beauty of a delivery and Jez also with the bat playing some lovely attacking shots, in particular some cover drives that Ian Bell would be happy with. It was also great to see a potential new player in Marcel, both handy with the Bat and the Ball and he also wasn’t too fazed by Charlie’s continuous sledging through his first few balls. Also wickets for Andy Smith, playing in his second game of the day! Ed bowling for the first time in an exiles shirt and some deliveries including a nice leg cutter were brilliant and he picked up the first wicket playing for the Exiles. Ollie playing in his second game in 3 weeks also picked up his first 2 wickets for the club and Jerry also picking his first up. Charlie got the last wicket with his first wicket bowling pace (ish) and bowling Nico. However the absolute star of the show was Chairman Mark Arthur who played the same sort of straight slog to put it nicely and connected enough to clear the 6 fielders that were straight and retired on 16. Most batsmen play the V however, the V for Mark was pretty much a straight line! With performances like that he will be opening the batting every week. Then it was the turn of the team led by Charlie to bat and a mixture of Stanley and Aarons bowling and trigger finger umpire Andy Smith, there were wickets tumbling quickly until Ed came in the bat and took it to the bowling with some lovely shots for 4. Soon Charlie joined Chris in the middle and after Chris was given out to a slightly iffy LBW Ollie came to bat. Charlie set the tone on his first ball when he hit Jez for a 6 that went a few miles ….. he then retired on 33. Eventually the rain called a halt to the end of the game and after a quick downpour everyone enjoyed a beer provided by the club. Special mentions to Shaun for once again putting on a great BBQ for everyone, Mark for organising the day and for everyone for coming to make it a success. Hope the same for next year minus the downpour at the end …..
