Match report: vs Plastics XI
Sunday brought Plastics XI to the Lakes for an Exiles home game. On a week where the forecast was terrible for Sunday all week, it was a pleasant surprise to see most of the day looking clear.
After a quick roll of the wicket from part time groundsman Aidan, Charlie won the toss and elected to bat first taking in to account the thought of the wicket getting worse as the game went on and helped along by the Ed having to leave at 5pm...
Luke and Ed started our innings and it was evident early that it was not the easiest wicket to bat on. After a quick run for Ed, he was bowled from a ball that stayed low and Luke was then caught. After some early wickets Josh arrived at the crease and once again got the Exiles into a better place with some solid batting and was then joined by Aaron who helped with some quick running between the wickets.
Just as it looked like he was set for a 50 he hit one straight to the fielder. However it was another fine innings at a crucial point in the game, especially impressive considering he originally walked to the crease without a bat.
Charlie was next in with the Exiles some runs light of a good total. A mixture of it being only his second time batting (not to mention an absolute shocker in the midweek practice at the lakes), the feeling that it was too late and we were some runs short didn't fill anyone with much hope. However, it was an uncharacteristically good innings that provided some much needed runs and eventually he ran out of partners and finished on a high score of 48 not out with Ollie staying at the other end until the very last over and Exiles finished on 188. A very defendable score on a tough wicket.
Plastics innings got started and Aidan and Josh got us off to a great start and they were on 1-0 after 4 overs with Josh eventually getting the breakthrough. After a couple more wickets with one apiece from Charlie and Leon, the Plastics captain came on and started to put pressure on the bowlers.
When it got to drinks it was clear that this was going to be a close game. but when new boy Toby got the Plastics skipper and then Aaron got another well taken wicket on his way to his season best 4 wickets, things were looking up.
After this, the Exiles were in control and then at the end Paul finished it off, capping an excellent spell with a much deserved wicket. It was a great team performance to get the win for us and everyone playing their part against a great bunch of people at Plastics and they even joined us in the pub after the game for a drink.
There were a few potential players of the match, Aaron taking four, Paul with a great spell at the end that put us in a good position but once again the award goes to Josh Pizey. He came into bat when we really needed to build and get some runs on the board. He did that superbly and hopefully soon will get that first 50. He also finished with incredible figures of 1-4 from 6 overs, bowling at the start and the end and was both his batting and bowling was instrumental in getting us the win.
Next week we visit TOM at their lovely ground and we look to carry on the winning form.
