Match report: vs Green Sox
Another Sunday and another game. This time a home game against a new team in Green Sox.
As we all arrived, there was one big thought on everyone’s mind and the polite way of putting it would be to state it was not an acceptable pitch. With the wicket so far over that one side was a monster boundary and the other side even most new born children would fancy their chance at hitting a six over. That is even without going into how poor the wicket was...
Charlie won the toss and with a team heavy on bowlers elected to field first. Josh Pizey and Aidan were back in the team together and they opened the bowling, both starting excellently.
While there was not wickets flowing like the week before, runs were not easy to come by. After their tight stint there was a change with Ronan and Aaron coming on and it took all of one delivery for Ronan to get his first wicket for the club.
Things were looking good at the fall of another wicket and it was the turn of a Jack Leach lookalike to come to the crease, the only downside to this was that he batted like Jack Leach on steroids and it became very clear, very quickly that he was far too good for our level.
Very quickly he was hitting sixes and eventually retired on 77. After he retired, the Exiles bowling attack took some more wickets and after 35 overs, the Green Sox innings came to an end, finishing on 236/8 with Charlie, Ronan and Josh Pizey finishing with two wickets and Aaron and Aidan also picking one up.
After a classic Norwood Tea, it was our turn to bat and we got of to a steady start with Luke scoring some lovely shots down the ground for a couple of fours. Then in quick succession, Jez was given out to a controversial LBW and shortly Luke was bowled with more credit going to the shocking pitch than the bowler as the ball didn’t want to bounce. Another example of Croydon council’s finest.
Josh Pizey came in and steadied it up while playing some glorious shots and eventually was joined by Aaron and together they put a fine display of batting on with Aaron coming in more aggressive but they both kept the run rate ticking over until just as he was looking set for a 50, Josh chipped in into the air and was caught.
This brought Aidan in and together with Aaron they continued until after a good innings Aaron was bowled for 40. We finished on 171. A respectable total where we showed a good batting attitude in an awkward chase and on another day things may have been different without the opposition having a borderline county player.
The player of the match for this week goes to Josh Pizey. A fine opening spell of bowling where he deserved wickets at the start and finally got them towards the end of the innings and then a great batting performance where on another day it would have been his first 50 for the club.
Some top work in the field also, well done Josh! Special mention to Aaron however for a great go with the bat and for picking up another wicket. Also special mention to Gideon who played the game after cycling from Norwood to Brighton just the day before. That is a top effort and what a mad man you are!
Overall a top team performance and unlucky as a team to not pick up the win. Over to another home game at our cricket ground (a term which I use loosely) and I can only hope we have a proper wicket next week in the correct place!
