Match Report: NECC vs Jamaica Inn Pirates
Another Sunday came and it was the trip down to Sussex for the annual game against the Jamaica Inn Pirates. A special moment as Charlie actually won a toss! It was arranged for it to be a 30 over game and that we would bat first.
Once the rain semi-cleared, Luke and Ewan started the innings for the Exiles. They both got us off to a good start, with Luke scoring quickly, until he completely missed the flight of a straight ball by about a foot and was bowled. Ewan then picked up some runs with some nice shots, until he decided to completely miss a full toss and was also bowled.
Lee then came in at 5 and fresh off his T20 game on Saturday afternoon, he came in when the run rate was getting lower and lower, providing an incredible innings as he batted the whole way through and was eventually caught on the very last ball of the innings after getting up to 35. Together with debutant Mike, who came out and absolutely swung from the hip, they helped rebuild the innings to a more respectable score and we finished on 132 with both Lee (35) and Mike (30) being our top scorers.
After a trip to the Co-op for some tea, it was our turn to field. Knowing we needed to keep it tight, Josh and Aaron both got us off to a great start and were very unlucky not to take some early wickets. Eventually Aaron got the breakthrough and sent the stumps cartwheeling.
This brought in the Pirates captain Richard Crockett, the man who seems to be the nemesis of the Exiles every year. Once again, this was the case, after a few half chances early, he then took over the game, playing shots through the gaps and even with the Exiles best efforts the game was then over.
In reflection, we just needed 40/50 runs on the board and with a couple of dropped catches, we would have had a very competitive game. We came up short this week but as a team we are growing and with a lot of players out, it was a good effort against a good team. Plus it wasn’t all bad as there were free beers for after the game both from the President of the Pirates and on behalf of the club.
Special mention also to Mike and Rob who both made their exiles debut and also Liv for making her debut and also being the first ever female to play for the Exiles!
The Player of the Match for this week is Lee who after being shattered from playing T20 on Saturday came in and played a brilliant innings, fielded brilliantly and also got his arm over. Well done Lee!
We now move on to the Brixton Barbarians, where the exiles will be looking to bounce back and get back on the winning trail.
