Match Report: Trinity Mid-Whitgiftian CC vs NECC

Around came Sunday again and we were faced with a trip to Trinity Mid-Whitgiftian in the kind of weather conditions that made it feel like an away test series in the West Indies.

With Captain Kalp out due to illness and Vice-Captain Charlie rested and in the bar drinking Cider all afternoon, Jez was the man to captain the side with Aidan as his Vice.
Jez won the toss and chose to get our bowlers out there. With No Luke, Charlie or Kalp in the team Bilal Stepped up to keep wickets.

We started the bowling attack with Aaron and Louie and they started the innings well, no wickets but keeping the runs down well and combined with good work in the field and getting away with a few full tosses, we restricted them to rushed singles.
Along came Drinks and there was a change of Keeper with Aaron making his debut behind the sticks and Bilal coming on to bowl. Again with some brilliant bowling Shah kept the runs down bowling 8 overs for 19 runs and 1 wicket, a fine effort in the heat. Bilal too with Shah kept the runs down and taking 3 wickets and taking is 200th Wicket for the Exiles Congratulations Bil!
Jez also brought himself on and took a wicket from a fine, calm catch in the slips from Aidan with one hand. Definitely one for the highlight reel. They ended their innings on 212 after 40 overs and with the perfect batting conditions, a pitch not doing too much and some short boundaries, there was reasons to feel that this was a very gettable target.
However, this soon changed, Jez and Sam went out to open the batting with hopes of setting us well on our way. However, the stand in skipper went on a run that he thought was there and a brilliant direct hit sent him back to the sidelines. Unfortunately, as is often the case on a Sunday, one wicket then brought 5 or 6. New man Lee came to the crease and was starting to settle the ship a little bit and play some lovely shots, however this came to an end when Lee was caught for 22.
It was then time for the youth of the club to show the rest how it is done. Aaron joined Louie out in the middle and put on a great partnership. Rotating the strike brilliantly and punishing the bad balls and dispatching them. They were going strong until Aaron mistimed a shot and was caught for 25. A great knock however and great to see him back in the runs. Arthur then joined Louie in the middle and just as we were all getting ready for a Wilson masterclass to get us back in the game, Arthur was bowled by one of the only balls in the game that actually moved and swung past his bat on to the stumps. Louie had now moved onto 45 and was joined by usual Exile number 11 Aidan. Aidan defending the first couple of balls then ran an electric (ish) single to get Louie on strike to reach his 50. I can only imagine that Louie had enough by this point and wanted to get back for the Holland game in the Euros as he started to swipe at a couple and eventually edged it into the air and was caught for a well-played 47 and that was that with Aidan finishing on 1 Not Out.
In a game where we should have won or at least gave ourselves a chance in, we let ourselves down with the bat, getting out to some careless shots and not being smarter. Player of the Match goes to Louie for a great knock that deserved to get to his 50, some superb fielding and his opening spell that helped keep the runs down and gave us a good start. On top of that, you could give the award just for the
ability to grow that level of a beard at such a young age. Honourable mentions too for Aaron who kept brilliantly and scored some great runs, Shah with a superb spell that got us back into the game and Aidan and Jez for stepping up on the day to lead the time.
Eyes now go to next week where we are back at lakes and the big question on everyone’s mind being will a pitch be cut or is it back on the astro….
